Recap: The Return

This recap is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Santa Barbra, CA shootings. May their spirit inspire good in the lives they touched; human and mutant alike…

Hello again. Sorry this recap is late, but I have been very busy getting ready for finals. I did say it would be up after opening weekend of X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it was indeed a massive one. I saw it this past memorial day, and I for one, loved it. Really enjoyed how the film not only did a very
good job adapting the beloved comic book story of the same name; but also proved to be a fantastic crossover between the prime universe of films (started in 2000) and the First Class timeline (started in 2011). The big standout for me; however, was the character of Quicksilver, a mutant from the comics who proved to be a great asset towards the X-Men. He has been confirmed for X-Men Apocalypse in
2016.

This brings me to the anime adaptation. It is one of several anime commissioned by Marvel, as I previously noted in my recaps of the first episodes of the Iron Man anime and the Wolverine. It is also very good; but due to the tone of the story and certain events as of late, I will be approaching this recap differently than I thought. So, let’s open up “The Return”.

We open on a very dramatic point, the climax of the Dark Phoenix saga from the comics. Being one of the more important ones; it has been done many times since it first ran, some better than others.

Right off the bat; it looks incredible in terms of animation.

"Jean! This isn't you! Don't let it control you!"

Ultimately, Scott “Cyclops” Summers has to make a call in the battle. It’s the right choice, but it leaves him devastated.

We then get our opening; which once again shows the script has been written by Warren Ellis, and the animation done by Madhouse; as it had been done for the previous Marvel anime. In the case of the X-Men, however; this is one comic series that has had considerable anime influence before. The animated series in the 90s had much of its animation done by Toei (Dragon Ball, Digimon, Sailor Moon, One Piece); and the Konami arcade game based on the failed “Pryde of the X-Men” pilot had a few of the special moves done in a style that would not be out of place in the Marvel VS. Capcom games.

It shows a few of the members that get used quite a bit; as well as Emma Frost and Hisako “Armor” Ichiki. The former; depending on the writer, tends to alternate between being part of the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants; if not serve her own agenda. The latter is a lesser-known member of the team that I would be open to seeing in films from Apocalypse onward.

I also note that Xavier in the anime bears a strong resemblance to Patrick Stewart from the live-action films; and Storm resembles an anime version of Halle Berry quite nicely.

Other members of the team being used in this anime are Dr. Hank “Beast” McCoy; who has a more canid appearance thanks to the art style being employed here.

Last but not least, we have “Wolverine” Logan. While Hugh Jackman may be leaving Fox when his contract expires, he has expressed interest in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe; particularly fighting alongside the Incredible Hulk.

We then cut to Xavier Institute, one year later; as the title appears on a rather melancholy look at the Academy. I also note I had to delay this recap after the attacks in Santa Barbra in order to not only rework the recap given the circumstances; but also because the anime has a much more serious tone than the prior ones I covered.

As Charles looks at Jean’s gravestone, he knows they lost something that day that could never be replaced. Even given the nature of comic book death; the emotional impact from what happens doesn’t truly go away.

On that day, we lost something that could never be replaced.

Old man, look at my life, I'm a lot like you were...

We cut to the countryside in Tohoku; where we see Hisako on the run. I must also note that this series did air prior to one of the worst natural disasters in modern history in that region; and we are still working on cleaning up the damage from Fukushima.

She is chased by robotic drones that may or may not be Sentinels (I’m not sure, the series hasn’t referred to them by name once in the first few episodes). She then activates her mutant powers; and Armor gets her namesake here. I definitely like the subtle color motifs that match her constructs with the amount of danger she’s in. Cooler colors start out mildly intimidated; and they get to hotter ends of the spectrum depending on the amount of duress Armor is in.

Xavier senses she’s in danger, and tracks her signature using Cerebro.

We cut to the ocean, where an ocean liner is being attacked by pirates.

Oh boy, it's Revy again. She gets pretty trigger-happy after a fifth of rum.
Of course, who should be a passenger but Storm?

I needed some time off after what happened in China last month.

Storm used Sheer Cold! It's a One-hit KO!

Then, we cut to Hank as he’s teaching a class at a university, much to the delight of his students.

Any questions, keeping in mind that I already explained about my lupine appearance?

It seems he’s teaching about marine life, using a squid as his subject.

A shiny Frillish! I must have it!
The class, however, is unimpressed.

Very funny, professor. Next I suppose you'll tell us about having drinks with Tony Stark!

He places a microphone in the tank to study how it communicates.

That's an odd tie-in.

The students find this hilarious.

I haven't laughed this hard since Joe Quesada started writing again!

This Kindle wasn't built for someone like me!

He leaves the squid to cover for him.

Tell us more about this idea you have for a waterbending ninja frog!

To the students’ surprise, he does take over the lecture! Quite well in fact!

Well, it started as a favor to Game Freak.

Logan’s entrance sees him at the airport, trying to get through the checkpoint. I have that problem even without an adamantium skeleton.

I told you, I'm a veteran! Guys like me go through here every day with artificial plates and limbs!

He then brandishes his claws to the shock of the TSA officer.

You want me to take off anything else, it's $20 for the first hour!

Logan then gets the call on his watch, and I notice his ticket is for Madrepoor, which was the location in the Wolverine anime I recapped last year.

Storm has arrived back at the academy. Regarding her outfit; it’s not just how Madhouse interpreted her design, we can be pretty guilty about giving her revealing outfits depending on who’s drawing the book at a given time. Besides, it’s better than her actress’ attempt at Catwoman.

Ororo, you look very...comfortable.

Logan has returned on the back of his motorcycle; complete with a leather jacket and sideburns that still make me feel inadequate about my masculinity.

I've got two tickets to paradise! You should pack your bags, we'll leave tonight!

Xavier is pleased to see Logan again.

Of all the years I've known you, you have tried to bear your burden alone. You don't have to.

Hank returns, in a Volkswagen, no less.

Scott has not answered his call, and is still at Jean’s memorial.

Everyone is briefed on Hisako Ichiki, and it’s mentioned she has gone missing in Tohoku; in addition to her mutant powers emerging (as they are known to during adolescence.).

They are assigned to try to convince Scott to join them; then to find her before a group known as the U-men does. While they are not the most inherently familiar members of their rogues gallery; they do show up in a fair number of comic stories and other adaptations. They are also a group I would be willing to read stories and see a movie about.

Wolverine, however, is less than convinced they need him.

After more deliberation; they do decide to try to talk Scott into helping them find Hisako. They go to the site where Scott is keeping a vigil.

Soon, they reach the vigil and try to convince Scott to join them and find Hisako.

When Scott refuses, Logan dismisses him as “emo.” This is a large part of why I decided to rework the recap; as the Elliot Rodger case made joking about that sort of thing uncomfortable. I may use it in a later recap; but for now, it’s a bit too soon.

Anyway, Scott takes issue with this, and attacks Logan. This is a good use of a recurring theme in the comics; where Scott and Logan are often at odds with each other because of their conflicting ways of approaching issues.

Ororo (Storm’s civilian name) then says with or without Scott; they will find Hisako.

Scott then dreams about being with Jean again. This is a genuinely sad scene given the decision he had to make.

Ultimately, Scott does decide to join the other X-Men in their search; and I notice that everyone is wearing the black costumes from the live action films.

“The Return” is a very moving and dramatic look at the X-Men lore in anime form. The high-quality animation, writing, and voice acting are a delight to watch. I have seen the first 3 episodes; and I plan to watch more as well. Even so, given recent events; I could use some levity. Next time, I shall recap the first episode of Sailor Moon to get ready for the new series in July!

X-Men: Anime Recaps of Future Past, a bit of anime news.

Hello again. I am working on my recap of the first episode of the X-Men anime, but I am delaying it because of what happened with Elliot Rodger to rework how I was going to approach it. Namely, I'm rethinking the parts that I thought would be callous under the circumstances.

In the meantime, there is a bit of anime news. It seems that Cowboy Bebop and Dragon Ball Z Kai will be returning to Toonami this fall; and Kill la Kill is being dubbed by Aniplex. These announcements are very pleasing to me; and I just thought I would give you something to look forward to while I work on the recap. You can see the full story on Otaku USA Magazine.

That will be all for now.

Recap: A Better Pill to Swallow

Hello again. It's been a while, I know. This school year has proven to be even busier than the last one
was, with classes related to my major that should help with this blog. Still, I could use something to
ease back into doing recaps. So, I think I'll do one of my favorite Johto filler episodes of Pokémon.

We open on Ash, Brock, and Misty on their way to Ecruteak City; and Ash is not feeling well at all.

I can imagine Veronica doing this between every take on Tai Chi Chasers.

Misty reprimands him for eating 4 hamburgers at lunch. He corrects her, saying he ate 5.

Probably ordered them from Jack in the Box.

Just then, an old man approaches everyone and says he has some medicine for Ash.

Dave's not here, man!

I'm skipping ahead a bit, but we now get our theme song; and it's among my favorite themes from those days, partially because of it being a remix of the original Pokémon theme.

We then get our title card, which is also very nice and simplistic.

How they stick in your throat! Tastes like gold!

Ash is taken aback by the medicine, and Brock starts shaking him down.

Your wife owes money to Jackie Treehorn, that means YOU owe money to Jackie Treehorn!

After a brief trip; Ash's appetite has returned. Yep, the typical shonen hero appetite; helped further by
the medicine taking effect.

Now where's my Cheez-It and my copy of "Meddle?"

The old man has made the medicine from all natural ingredients, including the juice of the Shuckle.
Hence, he is referred to as Old Man Shuckle. The medicines have all sorts of effects on humans and
Pokémon alike.

And they're 100% legal in this region!

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT! WRAPPED UP LIKE A DEUCE! ANOTHER LONER IN THE NIGHT!

Old Man Shuckle takes everyone back to his cottage, where he makes the medicine during theday.

And at night, I watch Fantasia on an endless loop!

THINK! IT AIN'T ILLEGAL YET!

Not only that, he has all sorts of Shuckle to make each kind of juice.

I call this one "Dark Star!"

However, he wants a purple Shuckle to make the best juice he can.

I will call this one "Cisco Kid!"

Brock agrees to help, given how Old Man Shuckle's health and memory are not what they used to be.

Old Man Shuckle has one more helper: a Bellsprout named Spoopy.

GET ALONG! GET ALONG KID CHARLEMAGNE!

Once they're out, they're not just after the purple Shuckle. They're after all the prime Shuckle.

Once they have them, Old Man Shuckle agrees to give everyone some of the juice. Only some that's
ready: the rest has to ferment!

Team Rocket has been listening in the whole time, and they're after the purple Shuckle as well.

Hoenn confirmed! It's not a joke this time!

The group is then given giant wheelbarrows to hold the Shuckle in, as if they were on a very odd

You get to play the Grocery Game on the Price is Right!

Of course, Spoopy is so overzealous in gathering Shuckle, following him causes Brock to falldown a mountain and crash.

I'm Brock, and welcome to Jackass.

Eventually, the purple Shuckle is found under a rock. How original!

Got you in a stranglehold, baby, you best get out of the way!

Spoopy and the purple Shuckle hit it off right away.

Brock, ever the romantic, imagines the juice will make him irresistible to women. Ash is skeptical about the idea.

Yeah, right! And I'm in a crappy dinosaur-related knockoff that makes Jurassic Park III look like an art film!

Team Rocket has returned, and their motto once again seems like they're trying to imitate Miley Cyrus.

I came in like a Wrecking Ball! I never hit so hard in love!

Jessie in this shot seems to be framed in a way to deliberately highlight her curves. I did just come off
recapping an anime which has much shorter skirts. Still, they're nowhere near as short on the skirts on

You're welcome, parents and older viewers.-Yuyama

They make off with the purple Shuckle in a cloud of gas that's only slightly trippier than most of the other stuff in the episode.

This gas smells funny! It's making me hungry and makes me want to watch Superman!

Once they're away, they decide to test the juice-on Meowth.

Just like that night in Sunny Town by the lake with a bottle of Old Murkrow.

Even so, Meowth wants more, and Jessie decides to try some.

Don't bogart it, man!

Lastly, James gets REALLY deep into the cup. He is going to be spinning tomorrow.

CHUG! CHUG! CHUG! CHUG! CHUG! CHUG! CHUG!

The scent of the Shuckle stops at the river, which doesn't do much good for tracking Team Rocket.

Pay no mind to the battles you've won! Take a lot more than rage and muscle! Open your heart and hands my son, or you'll never make it over the river!

It seems the rest of the Shuckle are making an exodus in the opposite direction.

On their way to pick up Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Old Man Shuckle then reveals the reason why the juice has to ferment and be prepared: drinking it

Now comes the part why I chose to do this recap as the first of many Johto-related ones for this blog:
Team Rocket has gotten absolutely smashed on the Shuckle juice. Notably, 4Kids didn't do anything to it. The imagery speaks for itself, especially when set to this music.

Overhead the Lugia hangs motionless upon the air...

Brock has determined something is amiss if the Shuckle are behaving this way.

The world's best Pokémon breeder, everyone!

Now, Meowth has even resorted to licking James to get his fix!

I'll take you to the candy shop! I'll let you lick the lollipop!

Another Shuckle has managed to grasp Jessie's arm in a suggestive manner.

Why are all the gorgeous ones homicidal maniacs?

As if to drive the point home further, everyone is running from a horde of Shuckle after that!

Go ask Alice when she's ten feet tall!

Then, Shuckle licks Jessie's bellybutton, and makes a very exhibitionist scream!

You found the sweet spot in Pokémon-Amie!

Even Ash and Pikachu are aghast at what's happening! The censors in 2002 must have been on the

Purple Haze all in my brain!

Yes, everyone is just astounded as I was from the perspective of both a 10-year-old and a 22-year-old
at how Kids WB let this fly. Not a bit surprised, as it aired on the same block as Batman Beyond; which I'm enjoying every bit as much rewatching as a young adult for the same reasons.

Old Man Shuckle takes it upon himself to end the shenanigans with a bag of powder to reverse the effects of the juice.

Brown sugar! How come you dance so good now?

To end everything, Pikachu once again sends Team Rocket blasting off with his signature Thunderbolt.

HERE COMES THE BOOM! READY OR NOT!

The juice has been perfected as Ash, Brock, and Misty decide to continue to Ecruteak City.

The day is saved thanks to getting higher than Mount Silver!

“A Better Pill to Swallow” is one of the many filler episodes that stuck out at me when I was younger; and the expressive animation and eccentric uses of the characters in the story make it an enjoyable experience. I have seen the first and a half of the subtitled episodes of Sailor Moon on Hulu for frame of reference, and I will be basing my recap on the dubbed version after I make good on my promise to recap the first episode of the X-Men anime to celebrate Days of Future Past coming out. You should see it up after opening weekend. See you space cowboy!

In the name of the moon, Sailor Moon is returning to DVD for 20th anniversary.

Hello guys, I am working on a new recap, even though it's been a while. I have been very busy with school; but I am working on sharpening my writing for not only my next recap, but also my planned recap of the first episode of the X-Men anime for Days of Future Past opening next weekend.

However, I have just been informed via Otaku USA Magazine that Sailor Moon is returning to DVD for the 20th anniversary of the franchise. It will be released with both the original version from 1993, as well as the new version, starting with subs on May 20th.

As one of the first anime series I watched (alongside Pokémon and Beast Wars on UPN where I used to live); I can say the announcement will come at a great time for both old and new fans to enjoy it. While it may seem like a more diverse market; I believe Serena "Usagi" Tsukino will still have a place in an age of Madoka Kaname and Ryuko Matoi. I think I might do a recap of the original pilot for the occasion as part of my From Humble Beginnings series.

While it may be a shojo, a genre that I'm not too big on, Naoko Takeuchi managed to make it one of the anime series that appeals to everyone in some way, regardless of gender, in the vein of Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for a certain piece from another member in the field: save it. I enjoyed the review everyone is going to ask me about, and it's something every male viewer of the series has gone through at some point. Besides, I can say that the Sailor Senshi are far more approachable female protagonists than Yuno Gasai.

That will be all for now, you can expect my recap of the first episode of the 1993 series after I recap the first episode of the X-Men anime. There is material, and I do like it. Now, back to Redline, because I couldn't get into the new Godzilla because of house-sitting.

Of Titans, Sailor Senshi, and Mega Evolutions

Hello, I just thought I'd check in, since I've had my computer upgraded and I'm mulling over ideas for new recaps. So, I just thought I'd give some random thoughts.

First, the English dub of Attack on Titan premiered on Toonami this weekend. I am enjoying the series very much for its dark fantasy setting; and I will be following it as much as I can while also reading the manga concurrently.

Second, the redesigns for the Sailor Senshi in the new Sailor Moon anime have been unveiled, and while they are slimmer than the original version (which I plan on rewatching to get ready before the premiere in July); they do retain Naoko Takeuchi's style nicely.

Lastly, I have seen the Pokémon: The Strongest Mega Evolution Act I special, and I found it to be flawed, but entertaining. Briefly, it's better than Chronicles, not as good as Origins.

Now, I have some homework to finish before I start the next recap. See you space cowboy.
