A smidgen of anime news for MLK Day.

Hello everyone, and Happy Martin Luther King Day. I wasn't expecting to make any anime news posts this soon, but here I am.

First off, I mentioned a couple times that the Yu-Gi-Oh license is once again held by Konami; the publisher of the popular Yu-Gi-Oh Trading Card Game. The series is currently being run on the Saban Vortexx block due to a mutual agreement between Konami and Saban.

Well, here's another bit regarding that. Starting this weekend, the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime is now airing on Nicktoons; continuing Nickelodeon's push to appeal more to young boys after losing ratings to Cartoon Network and Disney XD. The anime originally aired from 2000-2005 in Japan, with it coming to the US in 2001.

Next, the Pokémon anime is starting its 16th season of the English dub on February 2. It will be called "Pokémon BW: Adventures in Unova"; and will continue to air on Cartoon Network on Saturdays at 8:30A. The season will start with "Beauties Battling for Pride and Prestige", and will air the remainder of Best Wishes 2 before dubbing Best Wishes 2: Episode N; in which the villains N and Team Plasma from the video games will make their appearance for the first time (they were originally supposed to do so in 2011, but the disaster in Tohoku ended up severely delaying their appearance).

Finally, I suppose I might as well tell you about some anime releases. Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt is now on Blu-Ray Disc; with a complete set of all 13 episodes now available. Now you can watch Studio Gainax's raunchy, politically-incorrect sendup of Western pop culture in the highest of the high definition.

Another release is the third season of Shin Chan, now available on DVD. At long last, the third season of the foul-mouthed 5-year-old Shin Nohara and his misadventures is available. It is the very definition of Not Safe For Work; as it is full of coarse language and jokes that revolve around domestic abuse, dead baby comedy, and skewering politics and pop culture.

That's about it for now. I have a couple anime DVDs I'm waiting for as something I got for my 21st birthday; but Amazon needed a bit to correct information on my order. They should ship this week. They're the next Pokémon Black and White DVD set, and One Piece Collection Two. I will probably make another Top 13 list for my next post; I'm still not quite ready to do another recap. See you space cowboy.

  1. Has anyone posted all of the dubbed episodes of Panty and Stocking on YouTube? I'm wanting to re-watch it again to see if the dub's any good as the sub, but Funimation seems to only have the first two episodes on its channel. It kinda sucks. Oh yeah, I was thinking of watching Powerpuff Girls Z when I'm done with Panty and Stocking. It must be symbolic in a way . . .

    1. There's a guy called DavidFizz that posted all the 11-minute vignettes on his channel. If you want to see them, you may want to hurry before they get flagged.

  2. From that statement, I'm guessing that Funimation usually flags videos that aren't under their sole possession. Would you defend this, or condemn it?

    1. A fair amount of the time, yes. DavidFizz's P&S uploads even had Funimation's watermark on them, which they put in the videos to make sure people don't take them.
Isn't that a bit of dramatic irony?

  3. Yes, it is rather ironic. It can be unfair that you have to pay $7.95 for a monthly subscription, but how else are you going to watch the dub without the Copyright Gestapo getting on you (there's a trope name for you)? Even if his videos get taken down, someone else will upload them without permission. What a shame for all parties involved. I would buy the DVDs since I ACTUALLY have money to do so, but my parents would ask if it's apropos, and God help me if they scorn me for buying NSFW material. So yeah . . . What's the general description of this next list?

    1. It will be on my favorite anime women. By the way, P&S can be watched with the free Funimation account now (which just requires your email address and your date of birth to verify that you're at least 17 to watch the TV-MA videos). And yes, it is very much NSFW; which is why my list of my favorite episodes didn't include any images. The Blu-Ray of the show I mentioned in this post has a nude Panty straddling a gun on the cover, to the point where it has a strategically-placed sticker on her torso so it can be sold in mainstream retailers (online retailers and specialty stores like Suncoast Video don't have the sticker, I think).

  4. Y'know, if you could link me to the dub of the third episode if you happen to see this reply, I would feel much obliged to your generosity. The only thing "free" about signing up on Funimation's site is a 14-day trial period. OK, thanks for your suggestions. I could buy it when I start college . . .

    1. I'm not talking about the trial period. There is a free version of the website, the paid version naturally has more shows. However, ask and you shall receive on that third episode. http://www.watchcartoononline.com/panty-stocking-with-garterbelt-episode-3-english-dubbed

  5. Oh yeah, I never asked: Do you think the sub or the dub is better? At first I was skeptical if it was any good, but from what I saw, it's pretty good. Yeah, I said it. However, I like the voices in the sub more. They sound a lot more, how you say, "fluffier." Yuck, that was awkward.

    1. I like the sub fine, but the dub manages to put in a lot more oomph by having the angels add "motherf***er" to the end of their chant. Jamie Marchi even remarked when she was working on another anime (I don't remember what it was called) that she wished she could use more profanity when dubbing an anime. Needless to say, she got her wish with P&S. I also find it funny how Marchi went from playing polite, genre-savvy Renge from Ouran to Panty, an angel who's a village bicycle with a filthy mouth. I've also read some pretty amusing reviews on Amazon who mistakenly bought the set for their children and subsequently complained about the very family-unfriendly content. Suffice to say, as a person who has seen both Akira and Heavy Metal; just because something is animated does not mean it's for children (though many Disney and Pixar movies do put in plot elements and jokes to appeal to kids, their parents, and just plain old adult animation fans).

  6. I never liked the act of censoring words that much. It's hard for me to determine whether what they said was "bullshit" or "motherfucker" or anything like that. Though I have no idea if you tolerate swearing in entertainment mediums. Have you ever heard of Drawn Together? That cartoon is very, VERY raunchy and offensive, yet in a really funny way. I've seen six episodes of it, and it's really good. Why do you suppose it has haters?

  7. It depends on the situation. Sometimes uncensored words are funnier, sometimes censored ones are. I've never seen Drawn Together, so I can't verify anything about it.

  8. Oh yes, my next series will be Neon Genesis Evangelion. You've seen it, so can you help me with something? Will I understand most of the symbolism that's inherent in the plot, and what do I watch before End of Evangelion? You need to watch Drawn Together. It's offensive and raunchy, but it's very self-aware about it. Plus, it seems that everyone involved had a lot of fun pissing everyone off.

    1. You may need to understand the symbolism. I haven't even seen End of Evangelion yet, so I say this: good luck.

  9. But you said you did watch the series. How could you have not even seen the movie yet? Maybe it would've been too screwed up for your tastes.

    1. To be honest, I haven't finished it yet. It is really good, though.

  10. Well . . . besides the four most well-known series from them, what are some of the more obscure Gainax titles that you have seen?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think I've seen any of the obscure stuff. I don't think FLCL counts because while it may be obscure in Japan, it is far more popular in America, to the point of Adult Swim lauding it as their favorite anime that they've shown. I am working on the next post, though.

  11. Oh yeah, Hottest Anime Women or something like that. Will this be judged on looks, or on actual competence? You'll probably reveal some of your waifus during this.

    ReplyDelete
  12. It will include factors of looks and personality. Also, I'm afraid I'm not familiar with terms like "waifu," so I try not to use them.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well, waifu is like a character with whom you have an attraction to. Most of the time it's not sexual, just an endearing term of endearment. Oh yeah, I watched End of Eva. I had no problems with it myself. And I heard that Soul Eater is coming to Toonami. That's just what I saw on Tumblr, though.

    1. I heard news of that on Facebook. I'm excited for it. Soul Eater has to be my favorite horror anime, both for its frightening situations and its Tim Burton/Neil Gaiman-like art style.

  14. On Facebook, you say. Did they say anything else is coming to Toonami as well? I expect some things after Thundercats and Sym-Bionic Titan are done with their runs.

    1. They haven't announced anything else. I'm personally hoping for uncut One Piece, so that the "big 3" will officially be on the same block. I also wouldn't mind Bakuman or Tiger and Bunny.

  15. I haven't seen Tiger and Bunny or Bakuman. Maybe next I'll watch Mawaru-Penguindrum. Toonami needs to show some comedic series as well.
